International Presence Of Hindi Films

Bollywood is another name for the movie industry, which produces several Hindi films yearly. The title of churning out the highest number of movies in India goes to Bollywood. Some popular Hindi movies because of its rich concept are acclaimed in the international arena by getting selected in the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Mother India is considered to be one of the most admired films in Hindi movie industry. It was Mehboob Khan who gave fresh faces to the characters of his earlier film Aurat (1940) and created this movie. Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt portrayed the important characters in the movie, which reflected the society and the customs of the old India. A poverty stricken woman in rural India, despite all the hardships she faces in her life, believes in good principles and values. But, to keep her word to the landlord, in the end she kills her son. Oscar jury selected Mother India as one of the five films to compete in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Mother India represents India after independence and became the 1st Indian movie to compete with other movies from foreign countries.

The second movie to get chosen from India for the Best Foreign Language Film Category was Salaam Bombay!. The film caught the attention of many by narrating the daily life of street children living in Mumbai (then Bombay). This film received many awards from international and national film festivals. Montreal World Film Festival, National Film Award for Best Feature Film and the Golden Camera Award – Cannes Film Festival are some of the acclaimed awards bagged by Salaam Bombay!, by this Mira Nair film.

Lagaan, starring Amir Khan, India’s one of the most leading actors, became the 3rd entry into Oscars. Released in the year 2001, the movie has the backdrop of Victorian age, where the British Government were controlling India. Lagaan is the story of unity of a village in India, which stands up to fight the taxation by the British rulers. This Ashutosh Gowariker movie was completed with 250 million rupees, which had British actors as well.

Water (directed by Deepa Mehta) became India’s fourth entry to the Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. The film shows 1938 India and the traditional customs prevailed at that time. The film starring Vinay Pathak, Liza Ray, Raghubir Yadav and John Abraham, caught the public eye many reasons.

Rang De Basanti, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, had the modern India depicted through the lives of some enthusiastic college students. The movie shows the change of passive people to active revolutionaries, who try to change the corrupt political system. Youth of India got influenced by this movie, who were wanting a change in the system. The film became the official entry from India after facing a tough competition from other films.
